Door Hinge Size Finder

Buying the wrong hinge is the most common mistake in a door hardware swap. Answer three questions below and we'll tell you exactly what size, how many, and what bearing type your door needs.

1. What type of door?

If you're not sure about thickness, most interior doors are 1-3/8" and most exterior doors are 1-3/4".

inches
2. How tall is your door?

Standard residential doors are 80 inches (6 ft 8 in). Measure if yours is non-standard.

inches
3. How heavy is your door?

Hollow-core doors weigh 25-35 lbs. Solid-core doors weigh 50-80 lbs. Solid wood with glass panels can exceed 100 lbs.

What about corner radius?

Corner radius depends on your existing mortise, not the door size. Use the coin test on your old hinge:

Dime -- if the coin curve matches the hinge corner, you need 1/4-inch radius Quarter -- if the quarter matches, you need 5/8-inch radius Neither -- if the corner is sharp with no curve, you need square corners

Where these specs come from

The recommendations above follow sizing standards published by Schlage, DK Hardware, and Lowe's. The rule of one hinge per 30 inches of door height is an industry standard cited across all major hardware retailers. Bearing type thresholds (50 lbs for plain, 50+ for ball bearing) come from DK Hardware's hinge size guide.
